Pre production (Neil)
Pre-production portfolio:
Financing:
Financing is important in the
pre-production part of media as making a movie costs a lot of money. Things
such as cast and crew need to be paid also facilities need to be hired this
would cost a lot of money depending on where about their needing to film also
props and costumes may also need to be bought in order for you to be able to
film the thing you want to. These and many more other things can cost a lot to
pay for so there’s two types of finances which are private and public. Public
funding means money that has been provided publically funded agencies for
example the nation lottery supports the arts from the department of culture.
The other private funding is where they get funds from an investor this is
harder than the public funding as it means that the person or company who is
actually giving you money needs to be sure that they are going to get their
money back so less known people may find it hard to get this sort of funding.
Timescales:
Timescales:
Having good time management in
pre-production is important so that everything goes to plan that you have
thought about. A way in which timescales might not always work is that actors might
have something scheduled on the day that there meant to be filming. This is
important that you pre plan all this out before you start to pick days to start
filing for you project. Also you have to make sure you are able to use the
equipment at the time they need them this is important in order to film the
scenes you need. Furthermore, if the time you shooting for runs over it can
have an impact on the budget as it would mean that you would have to spend more
money.
Facilities:
Facilities:
An important part of pre-production is
thinking about what you are going to need in order to shoot your movie this is
important as if you don’t have all of this planned out by the time you go round
to shooting your movie it means that you will be stuck shooting it without a
proper full set of props which makes your filming a lot worse than it would
have been if you just planned it out. Also having access to Foley would be
important for this as it is a key part of making a successful movie.
Locations:
Locations:
Before going off and shooting footage for
your product it needs to have been thought out so that you know where you’re
going to record the shots as it needs to have a purpose to be filmed there.
Also with needing to record in different places you have to be sure you have
permission to film there. In addition, health and safety is an important factor
in this as it has to be checked properly before using that place to shoot.
Personnel:
Personnel:
Every film needs to have actors or it would
just not work trying to make a film without them. But there are more than just
them who you need in order to create a successful film. This includes the
extras that you need in the scene this plays an integral in the movie as
without them the film would not have that realistic feel to it like it should
do if they were filming a scene in a crowded street. Other people such as stunt
crew need to be put in account as they play a big part in films that have a lot
of action in them for example the avengers franchise need to hire this to do
the stunts.
Additional materials:
Additional material:
Also films need to have things such as a
storyboard which gives the people who are going to be shooting the film an idea
of what they have to do this helps them as it gives them an idea on how they’re
going to do that by planning it before hand by using the story board they had.
Again another additional material would be that of props and costumes this is a
very important part when making a film as without this the characters would
just look plain wearing their own cloths this is why costumes are good as it
helps set the scene for wear the films is set and the time it is set in.
Codes
of practice/ Regulations
Codes of practice/ Regulations:
This is very important part when making a
film as it involves the health and safety parts of it that need to be taking
into account while filming the movie. This has to be there because if someone
was to get injured and there was not a form already written out stating that
the thing they had got hurt from was already a risk they go sue the company and
they would lose a lot of money from that. Furthermore, if you were to use a
song in the movie you would have to have the copy write side of things filled
put as if that was not done they could just take the music out of the movie or
give you a fine for using it without their permission.
Formats for pre-production
The
proposal:
The proposal:
The proposal is important in film making as
it gives you the basic idea of what is going to need to be done to make the
film this includes a brief synopsis, key character information, sums up the
structure of the narrative and considers the target audience. Because all of
this has been thought out it means that people are then able to write a script
for the movie as they have the basic ideas for the movie.
Scripting:
Master scene script:
Scripting: Master scene script:
The master scene script is important as it
allows investors to see the idea in a straight forward way that’s not too
confusing for them to understand. This is done by displaying all the key parts
of a scene on one piece of paper by telling them if it’s an interior or
exterior scene, dawn or dusk and night or day. Furthermore, there is also a
clear understanding of the story line on this as well as it’s the most
important part of the movie is having a story line that you are able to follow
easily. It wouldn’t ever overwhelm the investor either as it does not have that
much information on it to do that. It will also have what can be heard on the scene
and what can be seen for example you cannot describe a characters feeling when
doing a master scene script. There will also be things called dialogue blocks
on the master scene script which show what the actors are saying. If the scene
moves from page to page there will be footers at the bottom of the page
indicating that. When you write one of these though don’t add the camera angles
and scene numbers. Footers are not always required when doing this either.
Scripting:
shooting script:
Scripting: shooting script:
Shooting scripts are used within the
production of the movie this is different from the master scene script as this tells
the camera men which angle to record from when shooting the video. Since these
are used during production of the movie it means that they have helpful tips on
for people to follow while they are shooting the film so that they don’t make
any mistakes. However, because of this they are confusing and will turn of
possible investors as they won’t know what’s going on when they read the
script. This shows how that the screenplay script is used for selling and the
shooting one is for the production of the movie. Scene numbers are also added
to the bottom of this as well and these remain constant on them throughout them
all.
Storyboarding:
Storyboarding:
Once they have completed the script it will
get converted onto to a storyboard this means that a scene can get split up
into different shots and is easy to understand what is going to happen. This
makes the job for directors a lot easier to do as they are able to spot a
potential mistake that could possibly happen. Also it helps to estimate the
cost for the production of the movie and saves time when shooting it because
everything has been thought out before doing it.
Shooting
schedule:
Shooting schedule:
This is used to show the people who are
filming the movie when and what time they are going to actually shoot the movie
so that it all runs smoothly for them. As oppose from just picking the days
they would shoot it picks the exact hour that it does get shot this gives it a
lot more of a precise time it will happen.
Other
paperwork:
Other paperwork:
Location release forms- These are used so
that you are able to use a location to shoot the film this is important as it
means that you are able to access the places you want to film as it would make
the film a lot better.
Location scouting templates- This is where
you collect information on where to shoot as some places are a lot better than
others for your movie.
Risk assessments- These are very important
as every risk that could happen when shooting needs to be written down so that
people are aware of what can happen and it also means that if it was to happen
they couldn’t get sued because they had already stated that risk before
filming.
Sound templates- This is used so that you
know when sound is going to be used during the production it’s important that
this is done properly as without sound the production would not work.
Copy write clearances: If you don’t get the
copy write clearances for a song it would mean that you would not be allowed to
use it during your movie is this was to happen it could mean that you film
wouldn’t work as well as It should.
The function of
pre-production
Pre-production
in a whole is where everything has to be thought out and planned properly so
that whatever you are making it is able to flow and there isn’t any hiccups along
the way for it as well. An example of this would be that the scripts get read
through multiple times to ensure that there is no mistakes meaning that if they
were to spot a mistake they would correct that as it allows them save time
before shooting that scene and mistaking that mistake while there filming it. Another
example is where they will have more than one writer working on the same
project at the same time. This can have its benefits and negatives as it can
mean that if one writer was to write something that didn’t make sense the other
would be able to point that out and correct them. However having multiple
writers on the same project can mean that people can get annoyed that there
ideas have not been used or even being made to put things into the film that
they don’t want in it. A good example of a film that has been changed completely
is Monsters university (the sequel of Monsters Inc.) originally it had been
planned out to be called “Monsters Inc. 2 Lost in Scaridise” where Mike and
Sully would have been trapped in the human world trying to find Boo after
discovering that her family had moved house. However this did idea did not go
ahead as the sequel was set in a university, this shows how pre-production is
important as that film went on to make a 543,559,607 profit showing that this
change was a good thing.
Purpose of
pre-production
This
part of pre-production is very important as it means things like health and safety,
copyrighted material, film permissions and actor permissions are all taking
care of. Health and safety are a very part of pre-production as you can’t have
people getting hurt while filming for you movie as they would be able to sue
you if that had not been stated before they started to film this falls under
the legal side of thing along with having permission of copyrighted material
this is an important part of it as it means that without it you wouldn’t be
able to use certain things in you film such as music. But if you did still
decide to use this it would mean that you could again be sued for a lot of
money as you are stealing someone else music to make profit from it. This is
the same with using locations that are private you need to have permission to
film on them or they again sue you for not seeking permission before using
their land. If you were to film in the street it would mean that you need
permission to do so and this can be done by contacting the town you are in or
going online and finding the form that gives your permission to film in that
town otherwise you might not be allowed to film there. After you have finished
shooting all the scenes for your movie and you’re ready to share it with the
public is has to have an age restriction on it this is done by the BBFC they
also have legal powers to reject or cut the film as well if they want to. At
the end of the film you have to give credit to the people who worked on the
film as well this is done by adding credits at the end showing everyone who was
a part of it.
